Industrial grit blasting of steel by Russo NV
Services

Industrial blasting & surface preparation

Grit blasting to Sa 2½ or Sa 3, on-site across Belgium. Vacuum blasting without grit spread and blasting in confined spaces. VCA & ISO certified.

Every durable industrial coating starts with the blasting. The cleanliness grade and surface profile determine how well the system adheres, and therefore how long it lasts. Russo NV performs industrial blasting with its own fleet of blast pots, compressors and aftercoolers: from complete tank shells to local repair with vacuum blasting.

We blast mainly on-site: on tank terminals, in refineries, on yards and industrial sites across Belgium and the Benelux. Cleanliness grade, surface profile and climate are measured and recorded, so the coating that follows demonstrably sits on a correct substrate.

What our blasting covers

Grit blasting to Sa 2½ / Sa 3

Blasting to the specified cleanliness grade to ISO 8501-1, with the anchor profile the coating system demands.

Vacuum blasting (spot repair)

Local blasting without grit spread: ideal for repairs in operational installations and where open blasting is not allowed.

Confined spaces & tanks

Blasting inside tanks and vessels, with breathing air, controlled climate and continuous extraction of dust and grit.

Surface profile to spec

Grit and pressure matched to the data sheet: the correct profile (Rz) for the specified film thickness.

Measurements & release

Cleanliness grade, dust test (ISO 8502-3), soluble salts (Bresle) and climate, measured and documented before coating.

Blasting and coating in one hand

Coating follows directly within the climate window, before flash rust can form. No discussion between blaster and painter.

How we work

Blasting is bespoke work: the environment, the substrate and the coating system determine the approach.

  1. 01

    Survey & plan

Assess substrate, access and surroundings; determine containment and extraction.

  2. 02

    Containment

The work zone is shielded and surrounding installations are protected.

  3. 03

    Blasting

To the specified cleanliness grade and correct profile, with our own pots and compressors.

  4. 04

    Measuring

Cleanliness, profile, dust, salts and climate are checked and recorded.

  5. 05

    Release & coating

Substrate release and coating directly after, within the window.

Why Russo NV

Certified

VCA and ISO 9001, blasting to ISO 8501/8502/8503 and the coating manufacturer specification.

Own equipment

Own fleet of blast pots, compressors, aftercoolers and breathing-air filters: no waiting on subcontractors or rental gear.

Dust-free option

Vacuum blasting for spot repair and sensitive environments: no grit spread, minimal impact on operations.

Measurable quality

Cleanliness grade, profile, dust and salts are measured and reported before any coating goes on.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between sandblasting and grit blasting?+

Colloquially everything is called "sandblasting", but blasting with actual sand has been banned in Belgium for decades (silicosis). Industrial blasting uses grit: angular abrasives such as steel grit or slag that clean the steel and create the anchor profile the coating locks into. Softer techniques exist for facades and furniture; our work is industrial blasting of steel.

Which cleanliness grade do I need?+

The coating system prescribes it. For most industrial protective systems that is Sa 2½ to ISO 8501-1; for immersion service such as tank linings often Sa 2½ to Sa 3. The technical data sheet is always leading; we blast and measure until that grade is demonstrably reached.

Can you blast without dust nuisance?+

Yes. With vacuum blasting the grit is extracted straight back at the head: no grit spread and hardly any dust. That makes local repair possible in operational installations, next to sensitive equipment and where open blasting is prohibited.

What does industrial blasting cost per m²?+

The price depends on the cleanliness grade, the condition of the substrate, accessibility and whether containment or extraction is needed. Open grit blasting of large surfaces is a different calculation than vacuum blasting of repair zones. Because every project differs, we quote after an inspection or based on your specification.

Do you blast inside tanks and confined spaces?+

Yes, it is a specialty. Our crews work with breathing-air systems, gas measurements, controlled climate and continuous extraction. See also our approach to tank coating and tank lining, where in-tank blasting is the first step.

How soon after blasting must coating follow?+

As soon as possible: freshly blasted steel starts forming flash rust within hours in humid conditions. We plan blasting and coating as one whole, so the first coat lands on a still-perfect substrate within the climate window. That is the great advantage of blasting and coating in one hand.
